Five Workers from Lampung Indonesia Become Victims of Human Trafficking
Kupastuntas.co, Bandar Lampung - The Lampung Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Center facilitated the return of five Indonesian Migrant Workers from Lampung, who were suspected of being victims of criminal acts of trafficking in persons in Malaysia.
Head of the Lampung Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Center, Ahmad Salabi said, the five Indonesian Migrant Workers arrived at Lampung's Radin Inten II Airport with the assistance of officers from the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia Johor Bahru, Malaysia, Wednesday 8 March 2023.
"In his repatriation we involved the Lampung Police through the Sub-Directorate IV Renakta Ditreskrimum, the Lampung Province Manpower Service to the Lampung Province Social Service," said Salabi.
Salabi explained that the five Indonesian Migrant Workers who departed non-procedurally were RW 55, AW 45, District Court 44, EWL 22, a resident of East Lampung Regency, and PH 58, Bandar Lampung City.
"This matter will be immediately followed up in accordance with applicable regulations. We are ready to assist the police in law enforcement efforts against perpetrators of non-procedural placement of Indonesian Migrant Workers," he said.
Salabi advised all Lampung residents to be careful and not easily believe in promises of easy departures to work abroad by simply paying a certain amount of money.
"If you want to work abroad, go according to the correct procedure and in accordance with the regulations in force so that colleagues get guaranteed protection from the state and their rights are fulfilled when working abroad," Salabi said.
Head of the Lampung Province Manpower Office, Agus Nompitu explained, Lampung is one of the areas that has channeled many migrant workers to work abroad, so more intensive supervision is needed to provide protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers.
Supervision is carried out by forming a Task Force for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers which involves various regional apparatus organizations, the Service Center for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, and various related parties.
"Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers through the team that has been formed apart from preventing the presence of illegal Indonesian Migrant Workers, also functions to anticipate human trafficking activities. So we have eliminated and minimized the crime of trafficking in persons," he explained.
Agus said, in an effort to provide protection to Indonesian Migrant Workers, his party would cooperate with the community or form volunteers to prevent illegal Indonesian Migrant Workers.
“Criminal acts of trafficking in persons among migrant workers cannot be identified directly, usually they will be caught after there is a problem, then it will be recorded and handled further. Therefore, preventive steps need to be taken to prevent it," he said.
To prevent the presence of illegal Indonesian Migrant Workers, his party plans to form a One-Stop Integrated Service to provide various services for prospective workers who want to work abroad.
"This year the One-Stop Integrated Service is being prepared for its supporting facilities and infrastructure. Later this will be used as a place to provide inspection services, document registration to facilitate migrant workers. So it can reduce the recruitment of non-procedural Indonesian Migrant Workers," he said.
Based on data from the Lampung Province Manpower Office, as of September 2022 the number of Indonesian Migrant Workers from Lampung was 6,115 people, while for the annual average before the Covid-19 pandemic took place there were as many as 21 thousand Lampung citizens who became Indonesian Migrant Workers and worked abroad.
The Indonesian Migrant Workers are divided into two, namely working in the informal sector 2,890 people and 3,225 people in the formal sector. As a comparison, in 2021 there will be 4,187 Indonesian Migrant Workers.
