Abdul Moeloek Hospital in Lampung Indonesia, Performs First Siamese Twin Baby Separation Operation
Kupastuntas.co,
Bandar Lampung - Abdul Moeloek Regional General Hospital in Lampung Province
will make history by performing the first operation to separate conjoined twins
or xypho-omphalophagus conjoined twins on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 tomorrow.
The Abdoel
Moeloek Hospital team was not alone, but was assisted by a team of doctors from
Doctor Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya.
Abdul
Moeloek Hospital Director Lukman Pura, explained that the baby girl with the
initials AF and AL is a resident of Karang Sari, Muara Sungkai District, North
Lampung Regency. The baby was born prematurely at 31-32 weeks' gestation with a
low birth weight of 3100 grams.
“These two
babies were born on February 3, 2022 and are currently over a year old.
According to medical calculations, this is sufficient time to carry out a
separation operation," said Lukman. Tuesday (14/3/23).
Lukman
explained that the conjoined twin operation was a rare operation and was the
first time it was performed by the team at Abdul Moeloek Hospital. So that in
carrying out conjoined twin surgery this time there are approximately 17
specialist doctors who will be involved.
“The
operation to separate conjoined twins is chest-to-toe. These two babies have
been under the care and control of Abdul Moeloek Hospital for the last year,
and many doctors from various disciplines have been involved in their
supervision," he added.
Meanwhile,
the head of the conjoined twin surgery team who is also a pediatric surgeon at
Abdul Moeloek Hospital, doctor Billy Rosan explained, the conjoined twin
surgery will be carried out for approximately 12 hours depending on the
patient's condition.
"The
baby's condition is attached to the lower sternum and liver, while the other
organs are separated. So that this baby is given regular care both inpatient
and outpatient as well as preventive therapy," he said.
He
explained that every year in Lampung Province there are always cases of
conjoined twins. However, many were separated outside the area and some were
declared dead before the separation was carried out.
"Every
year there is almost one case of conjoined twins in Lampung, but sometimes the
feasibility of the operation is not yet available, so we send them out of the
area but some do not survive. The last two years there has been one case,"
he said. (*)
